Cheddar

Cheddar is a large, world-famous village in Somerset set at the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, best known for its dramatic natural beauty and rich culinary heritage. The village gives its name to England's largest limestone ravine, Cheddar Gorge, where sheer, 400-foot cliffs drop down to winding roads and show caves like Gough's Cave, the excavation site of "Cheddar Man," Britain’s oldest complete human skeleton. Beyond its geological marvels, underground caverns, and scenic clifftop walks, the village remains celebrated as the birthplace of Cheddar cheese, where local creameries still age their produce inside the gorge's natural caves, making it a bustling destination for outdoor adventurers, history enthusiasts, and food lovers alike.

Cheddar, Somerset BS27 3QF. The Gorge is the biggest and finest inland limestone gorge in the country. It has beautiful stalagmite caves (there is a charge). Also plants such as the Cheddar Pink and Cheddar Bedstraw are only found here. The woods support a thriving population of Dormice and there are many other rarities to be found locally. Many of the rockfaces in the Gorge have names, especially those used by climbers.
